Reiki
What does Reiki mean?
Usui developed Reiki in the early 1900s. The word comes from the Japanese words “rei” which means “universal” and the word “ki” which means “life force energy”. It is the word used to describe the energy that flows through everything in our universe.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a healing approach in which practitioners place their hands lightly on or just above a person, directing energy to help facilitate the person’s healing response as it improves the flow and balance of your energy. A practitioner who is a level ll or higher can direct Reiki anywhere in the world using Distant Reiki.
Reiki is a technique that heals your energy and promotes relaxation, as well as reduces stress and anxiety.
What are the health benefits of Reiki?
The relaxation, reduction of stress and anxiety that Reiki promotes can lead to symptom relief and improve overall health and well-being. It can :
· Foster tissue and bone healing after injury or surgery
· Relieve pain and tension
· Bring on a meditative state
· Support the well-being of people receiving traditional medical treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and kidney dialysis
· Stimulate your body’s immune system
· Promote natural self-healing
Studies show that Reiki helps with finding inner peace, emotional security, mental/emotional/physical health, and relaxation
Can Reiki replace traditional treatments?
No. Reiki treatments should not ever be used to replace or even substitute for the treatment that comes from a physician or a psychotherapist. Reiki is a complimenting healing technique and can increase the efficacy of other types of healing.
If you are in good health, though, regular Reiki treatments can enhance your ability to respond to stress and serve as a form of preventive medicine.
What happens during a Reiki session?
A typical Reiki session lasts around 50 minutes. During an in-person session, you lie on a massage table as your Reiki practitioner gently places their hands on or just above your body in specific energy locations. They will use between 12-15 different hand positions. The time between the positions varies as the areas that need more help will receive the energy longer.
Reiki is different from other touch therapies because there is no pressure applied to your body.
During a distant Reiki session, you will get to choose where to lay that you are most comfortable. That may be your bed or a hammock outside. Your practitioner will let you know when they are starting and when they are finished via text or if you are using a video conference they will speak just like in a normal Reiki session.
The energy you receive in a distant session will be just as strong as if you were in person.
A distant Reiki session is ideal for those who don’t live close enough to the practitioner, those who do not like to be touched, and especially those who do not or cannot leave their home.
What does Reiki feel like?
Not everyone feels the same thing and some people feel something different at each session. The sensations you may experience are
· Heat
· Tingling
· Pulsing
· Cold
You may only feel these sensations where the practitioner places their hands or you may feel them move throughout your body.
Remember that not everyone will feel these sensations, you may not notice anything at all.
Most people completely fall asleep as the relaxation and peace wash over them and that is ok. Remember this is a healing experience so simply let your body feel what it needs.
